Prominent Greek Poet Kiki Dimoula Passes Away at 89

Kiki Dimoula, one of the most acclaimed and awarded Greek poets, passed away on Sunday afternoon after being hospitalized for the past few days with respiratory and heart problems. She was 89.

Kiki Dimoula was born in 1931 in Athens, where she lived all her life. She got married to engineer and poet Athos Dimoulas, with whom she had two children. She worked for the  the Bank of Greece for 25 years.

In 2002 she was elected as a full member of the Academy of Athens. In 2015 she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Theology by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Her poems have been translated into several foreign languages, including English, French, Spanish, Italian and Swedish.

Dimoula started receiving awards for her work in 1972, with the State Poetry Award for her collection “The Little of the World”. She was honored with the same award in 1989 for her collection “Hello Never”. In 1995 the Academy of Athens awarded her the ‘Ouranis Award’ for her collection “The puberty of oblivion”.

In 2001 she was awarded the Academy of Athens Excellence in Letters honor for her work as well as the Golden Cross of the Order of Honor by the then President of the Republic, Konstantinos Stephanopoulos.

In 2009, she was honored with the European Literature Prize, and in 2010 she was awarded with the Grand Prize for Literature.

“Greek poetry has lost its emblematic Muse today, one who gave it the authentic glow of international recognition,” stated President of the Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos on the occasion of the death of Kiki Dimoulas.

“Her work will ensure the spiritual eternity she deserves, while making the void left after her loss even more painful,”
