A 69-year-old resident of Mykonos has contracted the novel coronavirus, becoming the first case recorded on the cosmopolitan Greek island, health authorities announced on Thursday.

The woman, a resident of the village of Ano Mera, began presenting symptoms of a lower respiratory tract infection about ten days ago and was advised by her doctor to self-isolate.

Her condition worsened several days later and she was put in an isolated, sealed-off room in the island’s medical center, where she was tested for Covid-19 on Wednesday afternoon.

The unnamed woman is now being transferred to Athens, where hospitals are better equipped to deal with the disease. Her condition has been described as “serious” by local media on Mykonos.

It is not clear how she contacted the virus. Cyclades 24 website reports that the island’s authorities are alarmed, since the woman has not traveled outside Mykonos recently.

Greece reported 101 new confirmed infections of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, bringing the nationwide total to 1,415 cases, with deaths rising to a total of 51 so far.

Of the new infections, 20 were confirmed on a large ferryboat carrying 383 passengers and crew which is at anchor off the coast of the Port of Piraeus.

In his daily press briefing, government spokesman and infectious disease expert Sotiris Tsiodras added that 90 people are currently intubated in intensive care, six have left the ICU. Coronavirus tests have been carried out on a total of 17,350 individuals across the nation.

“No one is invincible; the point is that we must not all get sick at the same time,” Tsiodras said.
